HOW A BUOY RELEASE HOOK WORKS

The clevis jaw of the buoy release hook is first attached to the buoy's pad eye. The vessel's mooring line is then inserted into the pulling jaw of the hook, thereby securing the vessel to the buoy. Upon departure, the tripping line on the buoy release hook is "pulled", thus disengaging the mooring line, and freeing the vessel from the buoy.
